Reserved instances are not actually physical instances, but a discount applied to the bill incurred from on-demand instances. AWS RDS reserved instance is one of the many other services that help you optimize your cloud cost.

Reserved instances are available in three payment options:

  • No upfront (billing is done according to a discounted hourly rate)
  • Partial upfront (some part of the cost paid in advance and rest of the remaining hours in the term are billed according to the applied discount)
  • All upfront (Full payment done in advance without any additional cost)

Therefore, you can reserve your instances since it is one of the best cost optimization practices.

Check your AWS RDS reserved instance (RI) purchase status to ensure cost optimization

To avail the maximum benefits of reserved instances in the form of billing discounts, it is necessary to make sure that all your RDS reservation purchases have been processed by AWS. If payment status is pending or if the payment is not successful, then the user will be unable to get the optimization of his/her respective cloud infrastructure through reserved instances.

There can be 3 possible scenarios:

Severity Description
WARNING This indication will be displayed when payment of your AWS RDS reserved instance is pending.
    OK This indication will be displayed when payment of your RDS reserved instance is processed successfully.
CRITICAL This indication will be displayed when payment of your RDS reserved instance gets failed.

 

Description of further columns are as follows:

  1. Account Id: This column shows the respective account ID of the user’s account.RDS RI purchase status-ss2
  2. Account Name: This column shows the corresponding account name to the user’s account.RDS RI purchase status-ss3
  3. Region: This column shows the region in which your resource exists.RDS RI purchase status-ss4
  4. Identifier: This column shows the corresponding instance ID of your resource.RDS RI purchase status-ss1
  5. State: This column shows the status whether reservation (billing discount) on your instance is active or not.RDS RI purchase status-ss5

Filters applicable:

Filter Name Description
Account Id Applying the account Id filter will display data for the selected account Id.
Region Applying region filter will display data according to the selected region.
Severity Applying severity filter will display data according to the selected severity type i.e. selecting critical will display all resources with critical severity. Same will be the case for warning and ok severity types
Resource Tags Applying resource tags filter will display those resources which have been assigned the selected resource tag. For eg- If the user has tagged some resource by a tag named environment, then selecting it from the resource tags filter will display all the resources tagged as environment.
Resource Tags Value Applying resource tags value filter will display data which will have the selected resource tag value. For e.g. – A user selects a tag named environment with a value say production (environment:production). Hence, the data of all the resources tagged as “environment:production” will be displayed. You can use the tag value filter only when a tag name has been provided.
